What Tally is good at
Tally has been around for decades. It is strong on double-entry accounting: journals, vouchers, cost centres, trial balance and year-end statements. Many accountants in Lahore, Karachi and other cities learned on it, so if your accountant already keeps your books in Tally, they will be fast and comfortable there.
That strength is also the catch. Tally expects the user to think like an accountant. Every entry is a voucher. The screens are built around keyboard shortcuts. A salesman at the counter or a son helping out after college usually needs training before he can bill without mistakes.
What Taajir is built for
Taajir starts from the shop floor. The main screens are sale, estimate, purchase, stock, parties and payments. When a customer buys 20 bags of cement on credit, the counter person makes the invoice, stock goes down by 20 bags, and the customer's ledger goes up by the invoice amount. Nobody has to know which account is debited.
Behind that, Taajir keeps a proper party ledger for each customer and supplier, expenses with categories, and reports for sales, purchases, stock valuation and a P&L summary, all exportable to PDF or Excel. Your accountant still gets the numbers. The person at the counter just never has to see them as journal entries.
Desktop, web and phone
Tally is mainly used on a Windows computer in the office. Taajir also has a Windows desktop app for the counter, with auto-updates and built-in WhatsApp sending, and the same account runs in a web browser and on a mobile app. A seth sitting at home in the evening can open the app and see today's sales, who paid, and which items are running low. A salesman on a route can take an order on his phone.
Internet drops are covered too. Taajir has an offline mode and syncs when the connection is back, with backups, an audit log and a recycle bin for deleted entries. With desktop-only software, backups depend on someone copying files regularly, and a dead hard disk can take years of records with it.
Credit collection on WhatsApp
For a wholesaler, the biggest daily job after selling is collecting. Taajir sends invoices and payment reminders straight to the customer's WhatsApp, with the balance due. Say 40 retailers owe you an average of Rs 35,000. That is Rs 1,400,000 out in the market. A polite reminder every week, sent in a few taps, brings that money back faster than phone calls. Our guide on collecting udhaar has more ideas.
Using both together
Plenty of businesses do not need to choose. They bill and manage stock in Taajir every day and give the accountant reports at month end for the books. Taajir's sales, purchase, ledger and GST reports export to Excel, so the accountant can work from them in whatever software they prefer.
If you are deciding between the two for a new business, ask one question: who will use the software every day? If it is you and your staff, start with Taajir. If it is a full-time accountant, Tally may suit them better. Our guide to choosing an ERP for a small business walks through the rest.
A day at a building materials shop
Picture a cement and steel dealer in Gujranwala. In the morning, a truck of 400 bags arrives and the purchase is entered against the supplier. Through the day, contractors buy on credit and each invoice goes to their WhatsApp, with a delivery challan for the truck driver. In the evening the owner checks today's sales and the total udhaar on his phone. At month end, the accountant takes the ledgers and the GST report. Everyone uses the part of the system they need, and nobody waits for the one person who knows the software.
The verdict
Pick Taajir if the owner and counter staff run the software every day and you want billing, stock, udhaar and WhatsApp reminders on a phone as well as a PC. Pick Tally if a trained accountant keeps your books full time and you need deep accounting such as cost centres, complex journals or multi-company consolidation. Many businesses do well with Taajir at the counter and Tally with the accountant.
