Month 1 of 5

Learn Git and GitHub in Bhakkar

Git keeps a full history of your code, and GitHub puts it online. In the last part of Month 1 you learn both, and from then on every project in the course lives in a repository.

What you learn
  • What version control is and why teams depend on it
  • Installing Git and setting your name and email
  • init, status, add and commit
  • Writing commit messages that explain the change
  • Viewing history and comparing changes with diff
  • Undoing mistakes: restore, reset and revert
  • Branches for features and fixes
  • Merging branches and resolving conflicts
  • Creating a GitHub account and repository
  • push, pull and clone
  • Pull requests and code review on GitHub
  • A .gitignore file and keeping secrets out of repos
  • README files that explain a project
Project this month

A GitHub repository holding your Month 1 invoice page and dashboard, with a clean commit history, a feature branch for a new 'discount' row merged through a pull request, and a README with screenshots that explains the project.

Why Git is taught in the first month

Most beginners save their work as invoice-final.html, invoice-final-2.html and invoice-final-REAL.html. Sooner or later they overwrite something important and lose a day. Git solves this. Every change you make is recorded, and you can go back to any earlier version in seconds.

Git is also how software teams work together. When several developers build a product like an ERP or a POS system, each one works on a branch, and changes are reviewed before they join the main code. Learning this early means you work like a developer from Month 2 onwards, instead of picking it up in a panic later.

How the Git weeks run

Git and GitHub close out Month 1, after HTML and CSS. Classes are in person at the AiroxLab office in Bhakkar. Git is learned at the command line, so you type every command yourself and see exactly what it does. The instructor walks through common mistakes on purpose: committing the wrong file, two people editing the same line, a broken change that needs undoing. You practise getting out of each one.

The practice is built around the pages you already made. You put the invoice page and dashboard under version control, then make changes in small, clear commits. Later in the week you work in pairs on one repository, so you see a real merge conflict and resolve it.

  1. Create a repository for your Month 1 work and make your first commits.
  2. Push it to GitHub and clone it on another machine.
  3. Create a branch called add-discount and add a discount row to the invoice: subtotal Rs 1,650, discount Rs 150, total Rs 1,500.
  4. Open a pull request, get it reviewed, and merge it.
  5. Write a README with a short description and screenshots.

The project

Your finished repository is the first piece of a public portfolio. It holds the invoice page and the shop dashboard, a history of commits that tells the story of how they were built, and at least one feature merged through a pull request. Anyone who opens your GitHub profile can see what you made and how you work.

Every project after this, from the JavaScript invoice calculator to the final project in Month 5, is kept on GitHub the same way. By the end of the course your profile shows five months of steady work.

What you should already know

Only the HTML and CSS from earlier in Month 1, so you have files worth tracking. The command line is new for most students and is taught from the start.

What comes next

Month 2 is JavaScript, where your static invoice page starts calculating totals and reacting to clicks, with every step committed to Git. The course runs 5 months at Rs 10,000 per month; full details are on the AiroxLab Academy page.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Git and GitHub?

Git is the tool on your computer that records changes to your code. GitHub is a website where you store Git repositories online, share them and review changes with others.

Do I need to pay for GitHub?

No. A free GitHub account covers everything taught in this module, including public and private repositories.

Is Git taught with a graphical app or the command line?

The command line, so you understand what each step does. Once you know the commands, any Git app or editor integration is easy to use.

Will my GitHub profile help me show my work?

It gives you a public record of the projects you built in the course, which you can share with anyone. AiroxLab does not promise jobs or placements.
